The portfolio project for BIO307D: Biostatistics will be completed over several weeks, using data that you collect from an online survey. Please Follow The Directions From The Professor along with the grading rubric.
Medical data, such as vital signs, are helpful in monitoring patients medical status. According to John Hopkins Medicine, 2021, this data is often-times dependent on gender, age, and athletic status. Please read the information below for more information.
Survey Data & Graphing
For module 1, you are to administer a 10-question survey and gather at least 40 respondents (more is better). We are not looking to produce scientifically valid results, so this voluntary sample is acceptable. There are several excellent options for online surveys. If you are unfamiliar with them, please read the following article from HubSpot that provides information on 16 free online survey makers.
Once you decide on the platform you want to use for your survey, you need to prepare the survey. There are eight required questions, and you can choose the last two questions.
Survey Questions:
What is your gender? You can either leave this question open-ended or provide options.
What is your current age? Leave this question open-ended so that individuals may enter any number.
The respiration rate is the number of breaths a person takes per minute. Sitting still, count the number of breaths for one minute by counting how many times the chest rises. Enter your respiration rate below. Leave this question open-ended so that individuals may enter any number.
Sitting still, take your heart/pulse rate for one minute. For most people, it is easiest to take your pulse rate at the wrist. Using the first and second fingertips, press firmly but gently on the arteries until you feel a pulse. Since pulse rates are typically constant, you can take your pulse for 10 seconds and multiply it by 6. Enter your resting pulse rate below. Complete 30 seconds of jumping jacks. Immediately following the exercise, measure your pulse rate again, using the same method as the resting pulse rate. Enter your pulse rate below. Leave this question open-ended so that individuals may enter any number.

Is your blood pressure typically low, normal, or high? Respondents may think to enter their actual numbers (not necessary), so provide the three options for them to choose from.
Is your overall cholesterol level typically normal or high? Respondents may think to enter their actual numbers (not necessary), so provide the two options for them to choose from.
Provide a quantitative medical question of your choosing. Leave the question open-ended so that individuals may enter any number.
Provide a qualitative medical question of your choosing. Provide options for the respondents to choose from.
To generate the greatest number of respondents, at least 40 but more is better, put your survey on social media and you will probably be surprised how quickly you can generate the data needed for this portfolio project. If you arent on social media, ask a friend or coworker who is to put your survey link on their pages.
Once you have at least 40 respondents to all your questions, complete the following:
Choose one of your quantitative questions from the survey and organize the data with a frequency distribution, relative frequency distribution, and cumulative frequency distribution.
Using StatDisk, construct a histogram of the data you chose for question 1.
Construct a stem-and-leaf plot of the data you chose for question 1. Did you split the stems? Why or why not?
Compare the histogram and stem-and-leaf plot. What are the similarities and differences?
Do you see any interesting patterns or conclusions that can be drawn from the graphs only?
Choose one of your qualitative questions from the survey and using a technology of your choice, construct a bar chart of the data.
Choose another of your qualitative questions from the survey and using a technology of your choice, construct a circle graph / pie chart of the data.
The portfolio project will be ongoing, so please use only one (1) document for the entire project. In other words, you will be adding on to the document for each module where there is an assignment.
