Biblical View of Leadership

We use the phrase Leadership by the Book in this course to mean leadership that is understood and carried out that way that God had designed. One of our goals is to gain a Biblical-Theological foundation that includes an understanding of the origins of leadership as part of Creation, to see leadership in the nature and character of God, perceive God in His role as a leader, understand His purposes for leadership in others, the qualities that He indicates in His Word and the examples that we see lived out from the pages of the Bible.

The purpose of this paper is to give you an opportunity to articulate some thoughts towards a theological view of leadership. Use the following questions as a guide. You are welcome to add other thoughts as well.

#1 As leadership is a function that is God given and in the Bible, how would you explain the origins of leadership? Established at Creation?

#2 When you think about Gods character, nature and actions, in what ways do you see God as a leader?

#3 What are some of the qualities of a godly leader that you see in the Bible, and what styles of leadership does the Bible point to and demonstrate?

#4 Who would you point to in the Bible as examples of great leaders (one from the Old and one from the New Testaments) and what was one key component in their spiritual formation as a leader (ex. a wilderness experience)?

#5 What do you feel are some of the key purposes for leadership – especially as relates to the integration of business as ministry?

#6 Would you agree or disagree with the statement that business leadership that is biblically accurate will naturally lead to a perspective of business that integrates business and ministry?

In the paper, include an introduction that states the purpose of the paper, a paragraph or two in response to the questions, and then a conclusion that expresses your view on why it is so important that leadership be carried out Gods way.

Resources: Some of this has been covered in lectures and reading, some was touched on when we developed a theology of business. You may need to review some of that earlier material. But feel free to add your own views as well.
