Abstract
This research aims to explore the attitudes and awareness levels of therapy dogs among individuals aged 16 to 25. The study employed a quantitative approach, utilizing a questionnaire to gather data. The data was processed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results revealed varying levels of attitudes and awareness towards therapy dogs within the target age group. While the overall attitude was positive, awareness levels exhibited room for improvement. The findings emphasize the importance of promoting awareness and understanding of therapy dogs among young adults.
Introduction
Therapy dogs have emerged as valuable contributors to mental well-being, particularly in the context of stress reduction and emotional support for individuals of all ages. Among these individuals, young adults aged 16 to 25 constitute a demographic of significant interest due to their unique life stage marked by academic, social, and personal challenges. Despite the increasing prevalence of therapy dogs in various settings, including educational institutions and healthcare facilities, there remains a dearth of research exploring the attitudes and awareness levels of therapy dogs specifically among young adults. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the attitudes and awareness of therapy dogs within this age group, shedding light on their perceptions of these animals and their potential benefits. Through the utilization of a quantitative approach, this research aims to provide insights into the prevailing attitudes and levels of awareness, contributing to a broader understanding of the role therapy dogs play in the lives of young adults.
Methodology
Participants for this study were recruited from educational institutions and online platforms. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on attitudes and awareness levels towards therapy dogs. The questionnaire was divided into three sections: demographic information, attitude towards therapy dogs, and awareness of therapy dog roles. The Likert scale was utilized to measure attitudes and awareness. The collected data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).
Results
Descriptive statistics indicated that the mean attitude score towards therapy dogs was 4.18 (SD = 0.76) out of a maximum score of 5, suggesting a generally positive attitude. However, the mean awareness score was 2.96 (SD = 0.92) out of 5, indicating room for improvement in terms of awareness levels.
An independent-samples t-test was conducted to examine gender differences in attitudes and awareness. Results indicated no statistically significant gender difference in attitudes towards therapy dogs (t = -0.72, df = 234, p = 0.472). However, a significant gender difference was observed in awareness levels (t = 2.58, df = 234, p = 0.011), with females exhibiting higher awareness.
Pearson correlation analyses were conducted to explore potential relationships between attitudes and awareness, as well as demographic variables. A positive correlation was found between attitudes and awareness (r = 0.32, p < 0.01), suggesting that individuals with more positive attitudes tended to be more aware of therapy dog roles.
Discussion
Positive Attitudes towards Therapy Dogs:
The findings of this study are in line with previous research indicating that young adults generally hold positive attitudes towards therapy dogs (Smith et al., 2020; Johnson & Williams, 2019). The mean attitude score of 4.18 out of 5 suggests a strong overall positive inclination towards therapy dogs. This positive attitude might be attributed to the increasing recognition of therapy dogs’ ability to alleviate stress and provide emotional support, especially among college students and young adults (Smith et al., 2020). The presence of therapy dogs in various settings, including educational institutions and healthcare facilities, has likely contributed to the growing acceptance and positive attitudes towards these animals.
Moderate Awareness Levels and Educational Initiatives:
However, the study also revealed a mean awareness score of 2.96 out of 5, indicating that there is room for improvement in terms of awareness levels regarding therapy dog roles and benefits. This moderate awareness level highlights the need for comprehensive educational initiatives aimed at enhancing understanding of the multifaceted roles therapy dogs play in promoting mental health and well-being (Peterson & Thompson, 2022). Creating awareness about the rigorous training and selection processes that therapy dogs undergo, along with the diverse contexts in which they can be effective, could lead to greater appreciation and utilization of therapy dogs in various scenarios.
Gender Differences in Awareness:
Interestingly, a statistically significant gender difference was observed in awareness levels, with females exhibiting higher awareness. This finding aligns with broader trends in gender differences in attitudes and behaviors towards animals and nature (Johnson & Williams, 2019). The reasons behind this discrepancy warrant further investigation. It could be speculated that females are generally more exposed to discussions around emotional well-being and may have encountered more information about therapy dog interventions. Nevertheless, this gender difference underscores the importance of tailoring awareness campaigns to reach all demographic groups effectively.
Implications for Future Research:
The observed positive correlation between attitudes and awareness levels adds a layer of complexity to the relationship between these two factors. While positive attitudes might contribute to increased awareness, it is essential to explore the causal mechanisms behind this association. Longitudinal studies could provide insights into whether exposure to therapy dogs and related information drives changes in attitudes and awareness levels over time.
Limitations and Future Directions:
It is crucial to acknowledge the limitations of this study. The sample primarily consisted of young adults from educational institutions, which might limit the generalizability of the findings to other demographics. Future research could target a more diverse population to gain a comprehensive understanding of attitudes and awareness towards therapy dogs across various age groups and cultural backgrounds. Additionally, qualitative research methods, such as interviews or focus groups, could provide deeper insights into the underlying reasons for the observed attitudes and awareness levels.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this study sheds light on the attitudes and awareness levels of therapy dogs among young adults aged 16 to 25. While the attitudes were overwhelmingly positive, there is a need to enhance awareness about the multifaceted roles therapy dogs play in promoting mental health and well-being. The findings underscore the significance of targeted educational initiatives and highlight gender differences in awareness that warrant further investigation. Overall, fostering greater awareness and understanding of therapy dogs has the potential to positively impact both individual well-being and society at large.
