Please answer each of the following two questions in 500 words or less:
1. Prior to the 2010 Census, Pacific Islanders were racially classified as Asian American according to the U.S. Census. Starting in 2010, Pacific Islander is now classified as its own race, distinct from the group Asian American. As well, beginning in 2010, individuals with ancestry in Western Asia (Middle Eastern countries) were racially classified as White.
The Asian American racial category now includes most individuals with ancestry in East Asian, South Asian and Southeast Asian countries. Individuals with Central Asian ancestry are not provided guidance as to which racial category they should select.
The Pew Research Center project that Asians will represent the largest immigrant group in the United States over the next few decades. Given this and the above facts:
a. Do you anticipate the Asian American racial category will change again?
b. Explain your answer.
c. If you answered yes, what changes do you expect?
2. According to Dr. Chen what makes the cancer burden unique in Asian Americans populations? Based on the readings of this week do you have other thoughts on why this may be the case?
