Read the literature about the snowball Earth hypothesis provided and write a 2 page essay arguing ‘for’ or ‘against’ the hypothesis. Your essay should begin with a short abstract where you summarize your findings, e.g. ‘Here, I argue for/against the hypothesis because …’. The next part of your essay should be a brief description of the hypothesis and thereafter a summary of ‘for’ and ‘against’ arguments. This section should be followed by your own analysis of the arguments ‘for’ and ‘against’. In this section you can refer to the literature provided and the knowledge you have gained by reading the Tellus courses. The final part of your essay should be a brief concluding statement (either ‘for’ or ‘against’ the hypothesis) which is motivated by your analysis.
The essay will be graded (A-F) based on the following questions:
Does the abstract correctly, completely and concisely summarize your findings?
Is the hypothesis correctly, completely and concisely described?
Are ‘for’ and ‘against’ arguments stated correctly, completely and concisely?
Are these arguments analysed critically, based on knowledge acquired in the Tellus courses?
Are citations provided following all factual statements, e.g. (Marshak, 2015) and is a full list of references provided at the end of the essay (e.g. Marshak, S., 2015, Earth: Portrait of a Planet, 5th edition, Norton and Norton, New York)?
Is the essay structured according to the instructions given?
Is the writing style appropriate for a scientific essay?
Is the essay free from grammatical and typographical errors?
