Apply one of the theoretical approaches to deviance from the textbook to Dr. Rios’ experiences. Application of theory is an advanced aspect of sociology–your task is to take one of the theories (for example: labeling theory, Durkheim’s concept of Anomie, social cohesion and punishment, differential opportunity theory, Merton’s social strain theory, etc.) and use the concepts to help explain Victor Rios’ life growing up, and his transition into a life of higher education. Define the concepts you use, and make sure to explain the main premise of the theory you are using. This is a sociological analysis–do not use first person and stay away from opinionated statements. End your write-up with a brief reflection on Rios’ story and people who may face similar circumstances to him.
