Make an argument for what you think has had a greater impact on human cultures in the 20th and 21st centuries: nationalism, or globalization. You should define these terms as part of your argument, and you are free to examine economic, social, cultural, religious, or political aspects of these concepts. Your response should be at least 500 – 750 words (about two typed, double-spaced pages in size 11 or 12 font).

Thesis Statement (5 points)
You must provide a working definition of “nationalism” and “globalization” as part of your introduction.
The thesis must explicitly take a side on whether nationalism or globalization had a greater impact on human societies c. 1900 – present.
The thesis must make a historically defensible claim; the paper must contain an argument that can be corroborated or contradicted using evidence.
The thesis must appear in the introductory paragraph of the paper.
Merely re-stating the prompt is insufficient.

Historical Contextualization (10 points)
Use at least two pieces of primary source or secondary evidence to advance your thesis.
The evidence must draw on a specific document or a particular person, event, trend, idea, or culture as a case study for your argument–i.e. by demonstrating the importance of war and conquest or trade and exchange.
Cite documents using the Primary Source number in the book, or the page number in Worlds Together, Worlds Apart–i.e. “Primary Source 9.1” or “Adelman, 403” (parenthetical citations or footnotes are acceptable).
You MAY include “Interpreting Visual Evidence” sections on this point.

Global Historical Context (5 points)
Specify how nationalism and/or globalization impacted at least two world regions.
You may consider Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, North America, South/Latin America, Africa, and Oceania (Indonesia, the Pacific Islands, Australia, and New Zealand) as distinct regions for purposes of this assignment.
You may link these regions to the primary sources or use additional evidence from the textbook to provide context. Please cite the page number in Worlds Together, Worlds Apart for specific historical evidence.
You MAY include “Interpreting Visual Evidence” sections on this point.

Analyzing Change Over Time (5 points)
Analyze how nationalism and/or globalization changed human cultures and cultural thought over time using primary or secondary (textbook) source evidence.
The change must be supported by at least two pieces of evidence, either in the form of documents or secondary citations (these can be the same sources you used for other components in the rubric).
In formulating your response here, it may be helpful to compare and contrast the impact of these forces on a common set of societies.
