After you have come up with the social issue, the next step is to find a social psychology concept or theory that adequately explains and provides resolution to the social issue. Even if the social issue doesn’t seem to have any social psychology research on it, that is okay. The idea is to logically apply the social psychology theory to the issue. I suggest that you peruse through the text to find a way of explaining your social issue.

The topic of your social psychology research paper must include a social issue and a relevant social psychology concept or theory to explain that issue.

The first step in composing a social psychology research paper is to come up with the topic. This is easier said than done. Deriving a relevant and feasible research paper topic is probably the most important component of the research paper process. Your ability to successfully find research and write about that research all depends on this topic choice.
I want you to think about a social issue in which you are intrinsically interested. Perhaps the social issue is something that has personally affected you or that you’ve recently read about in the news. Truly, the sky is the limit with regards to the social issue. I’m not looking for social psychology relevant issues; if you look at the applied research in the book you will see that the issues being addressed are diverse and typically auspicious. Be careful, however, with proposing psychological disorders. Historically, students choosing these topics have had great difficulty in finding relevant research to explain the topic from a social psychology perspective. The example social issue I’m going to use is the housing bubble recession.

For my social issue, the housing bubble recession, I’m interested in explaining why it persisted for such a long timethe longest recession since World War II. Thus, I am probably going to start my explanation in the social influence chapter. Upon closer inspection of this chapter, I think that informational social influence is a great theory for explaining the recession. Informational social influence is a form of social influence in which people look to social others to gain information on how to think and behave. This concept occurs in situations in which people are ambiguous about the correct course of action to take. In addition, when the situation is a crisis, people are even more likely to fall susceptible to informational social influence.

Recent issues have examined social psychological approaches to studying homelessness, promotion of a sustainable future, gender stereotyping, privacy, sexual harassment, and the relationship between religion and personal and social well-being. This will be an eight to nine page paper including the title page, abstract page, and reference page. Use the APA style manual for publication as a resource for formatting your paper (to the best of your ability). You may choose to write on any topic found in the text, but please narrow your topic so there can be an in-depth analysis of it (depth is better than breadth). You must include at least 6 scholarly resources and cite them in your work. The book cannot count as one of your sources; although you may use the book sparingly to define your topic. The text of your paper should be double spaced, have one inch margins, and be written in twelve-point font size (Times New Roman or Arial style). Ten percent will be deducted for each day that your paper is late. Before the final paper is turned in, topic selection (5 points) and an annotated bibliography (10 points) will be due on the dates found in the schedule below.
