After reading the essays, A Homemade Education, by Malcolm X and Maya Angelous Graduation, two young students decided to engage in a debate.
Student A is of the opinion that Angelou’s journey has been more fulfilling than Malcolm X’s journey, and she has shown more growth than Malcolm X in his circumstances because Angelou is merely a child, and yet by the end of the essay, she is able to cast aside all her demons (including self-doubt, shame, and even Donleavy) to be “on top again”. Student A adds that Malcolm X is only in prison because of his crimes, so incarceration should not be used when comparing the growth of the two writers.
Student B is of the opinion that Malcolm X has shown more growth than Angelou because although is he incarcerated and has very little access to education, he somehow manages to teach himself to read and write.
