Read the following essay, The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria, by Judith Cofer, acclaimed author, poet, novelist, and essayist. This essay serves as a type of a memoir of Cofer’s childhood and adolescent years, and, after reading the essay, you will clearly see the roles that culture ,language ,and gender played into her experiences growing up.
Cultural diversity influences learning through cultural attitudes, values and family interaction patterns. Some interaction patterns compliment classroom learning. At other times, cultural values can interfere with school success. After reading the essay, discuss at least two cultural value patterns you identify that might have hampered Judith Cofer’s success in school.
The final paragraph of your reflection will be about you and your own experiences that may or may not have influenced your learning. First of all, have you ever been stereotyped or discriminated against because of your religion, ethnicity, race, language, gender, or sexual orientation? What was your emotion in the moment? How did/does it affect you as a learner?
On the other hand, you may consider yourself fortunate if you have not experienced any stereotyping or discrimination based on your cultural values, attitudes, and family interaction patterns. Please explain how these influences have contributed to your learning success.
