The elements of persuasion, ethos, logos, and pathos, appear at varying degrees in every form of communication. Anytime we attempt to communicate, we are persuading our audience to listen to us, convincing them that we are trustworthy, and making our ideas logical and reasonable. However, these elements are especially important when the purpose of the communication is to persuade the audience into some form of action to buy, to vote, to hate, to love.
Ethos, Logos, and Pathos
Ethos deals primarily with credibility. You will want to examine the creators reputations or authority, particularly if they represent an agency or corporation. These factors as well as the visual itself will either improve or detract from the visuals credibility and effectiveness.
Logos is concerned with the logic of the argument. In considering a visuals use of logos, you will want to focus on issues such as how the visual is constructed. For this you will need to address the organization and composition of the visual. You might also discuss the medium, scale and perspective as well.
Pathos deals with emotion. You should identify any attempts to evoke an emotion. The content of the visual, the use of color, as well as scale and perspective can be useful in addressing the visuals appeal to emotions.
Step One
Find an ad in https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/tccd-ebooks/reader.action?docID=1876116&ppg=1 and provide a brief analysis here of the ethos, logos, and pathos at work in the ad campaign (an ad campaign can involve several ads and associated events and instillations like artwork showings). Be sure to clearly identify the ethos, logos, and pathos in your overview. You do not need to cite or link to the source material, since it was provided, but you should be clear which ad campaign you are referring to. Your analysis should be about 300 words long.
Step Two
Find one initial post and bring it forward into the current day by identifying a modern ad or ad campaign that you feel matches up with the ad in the initial post in terms of it’s ethos, logos, and pathos. For this discussion board post, you can use any kind of ad (commercial, print, digital, even advergames). Provide a brief description of the modern ad that you are discussing and a short comparison of the ethos, logos, and pathos in both your ad and the ad campaign you are replying to. This post should also be 300 words.
