In todays world it is almost impossible to watch the news, read a newspaper or browse the net, without hearing about another case of innocent people being gunned down, run over by motor vehicles, or killed in mind numbing explosions somewhere in the world. The use of motor vehicles and large trucks has now been employed to terrorize people out and about, minding their own business. In the last few years a peace rally was disrupted by an explosion in Ankara, Turkey and almost 100 people were killed with hundreds more were seriously wounded. Western Europe has been rocked with numerous attacks at concerts, public spaces, streets, bridges and markets. The USA has of late, been recently been targeted in a big way. San Bernardino, CA, Las Vegas, NV and Jonesboro, SC and even New York City, (again). This list is far from all inclusive, by the way.
In the United States, in Roseburg, OR at a small community college campus, (not unlike Our NY State College), an active shooter armed with 4 weapons entered that campus and murdered approximately 10 people and wounded 20 to 30 others. Does this carnage ever end?
We are all vulnerable to random acts of violence in the world in which we now reside. What can we do to protect ourselves? Aside from legally carrying weapons of our own, which is illegal in New York City and not easily accomplished in the remainder of the state, (unless you are part of law enforcement, are a business owner, or have some special permission), the promise of living life without constant fear of attack, is fleeting.
The answer to this dilemma and to the larger question asking what causes people to make wanton, mindless choices to kill, is an unending topic of national debate, whatever your politics or beliefs.
We study together in a small, unprotected college building. Have we ever considered what to do in the unlikely, but possible, instance that perhaps, we could be targeted here someday?
In the aftermath of every unspeakable loss of life, the media interviews locals which invariably includes someone being quoted as saying, I never thought this could happen here. This is someone elses problem, but not ours.
To try to get a handle on the complexities and issues of these, all too often occurrences, read the article by Dennis Krebs, entitled, “Fire/EMS at Active Shooter Incidents” Fire Engineering Magazine, which tackles the subject from the perspective of first responder, and do the following:
Using what you have learned about the Incident Command System and through your own unique life experience, prepare a report which addresses the theories why some people would attack helpless innocents who have not engaged the attacker?
Talk about the tactics mentioned by Krebs in the article, which discuss how we can save ourselves?
Further discuss how law enforcements tactics have evolved from pre-Columbine High School active shooter attacks to post CHS?
Finally, do you agree or disagree with the conclusions presented by the author and provide your reasons why?
