A research proposal is a paper you write to describe an idea you wish to investigate.
Although there are a variety of ways to write a research proposal, they all have to include
a few basic things: states the problem, has clear objectives, states why the research is
worth doing, the proposed research methods and a timeline. At a minimum, a research
proposal should include these things, but because this is a very short class we are going to
focus on the following question for this classs proposal.
1. What is your research topic?
I want your topic to be something that youre genuinely interested in and perhaps can
help you (on a personal level) in ways outside of the classroom. It could be something
that youve been curious about but havent had the chance to get to. Do you want to
investigate Chican@/Latin@ politics? Is education your area of interest? Maybe there
something in popular culture (commercialization of Dia de los Muertos, trap corridos)?
There are so many topics to choose from, here are some ideas to get you thinking:
Working with and supporting street vendors
If the Supreme Court rules against affirmative action, how will Chican@ students
be impacted?
Chican@ representation in the media
Are California laws that ban low rider cruising, racist?
Gentrification vs. Gentification
The state of Chican@ politics post-Raza Unida Party.
What successful Chican@ business models should we be paying attention to?
What have been successful interventions in special education with
Chican@/Latin@ students?
2. Why is the topic you chose worthy of attention?
Part of being Chican@ studies students is being young scholars of the field and that
entails growing the field. The research we propose is how you grow the field. How does
your research fill any gaps in the current research? What problem(s) is your work
addressing?
3. What are the personal or community connections to this topic?
4. Provide a brief and meaningful title to your project
