Engaging in a Text: Modern Movement

The fictional short-story Apples from the Desert by renowned Israeli author Savyon Liebrecht is a touching depiction of the struggles of Jewish identity and family in modern times. Translated from the Hebrew Tapuchim Min Ha-Midbar, which was published in 1986, the story has become so popular in Israel that is was adapted into both a stage-play and a film, with the play version winning the Israeli Academy Award for Best Play in 2006 and the film version receiving multiple award nominations in 2014.

After reading the short-story: Why do you think Apples has proven to be so popular over such a long span of time? What aspects of the story speak to the issues of Jewish identity that we read about this week? What aspects of the story reach beyond a Jewish audience?
