Legislative History in Special Education. Bridging research and theory related to the regulatory law is often difficult; finding topics of interest and reflecting on those through your own practice and experience helps close the gap between theory, research and practice. Locate one section of the IDEA 2004 law and regulations. (You can find these through the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services OSERS at the U.S. Department of Education, on the New Mexico Public Education Department NMPED website, Wrightslaw website wrightslaw.com (Links to an external site.), or through the Council for Exceptional Children CEC- www.cec.sped.org (Links to an external site.)) and write your reaction to what the law states. For example: Section 602 “Homeless Children” you would read the law/regulation and then react to the law. Your reaction is unlimited…do you agree or disagree?…why? Do you feel that the section is too restrictive, or not restrictive enough?…why? Your reaction to IDEA Sections should be a minimum of one page and no more than two pages in length. You can access the Legislative History/Timeline file attached for a historical perspective on the evolution of special education in the schools of the United States.
*I don’t have a preference as to what law is reviewed or the side of the opinion*
