INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSIGNMENTS: SYNTAX
Purpose
Syntax and grammar go hand-in-hand with each other. Understanding the syntax of English can help us become better writers and better teachers. When we are working with syntactic trees, there is a visual representation of English grammar at work.
Procedure
1. From your Simple and Compound Sentences Exercises, choose six sentence: three simple sentences and three compound sentences.
2. Draw syntactic trees for the 6 sentences that you have chosen.
3. You may handwrite or type this assignment. If you handwrite your assignment, you will need to scan and upload your assignment as a PDF.
Remember, this is your time to shine! Show off what you have learned about syntax by drawing some trees. It is in your best interest not to choose sentences that have many dependent and independent clauses. But if you choose to tackle more difficult sentences, you will be graded more leniently than if you chose a sentence with only three words.

Remember:
1. A simple sentence would not require a comma.
Example: She went to see the movie and liked it very much.
2. A compound sentence requires a comma before the conjunction or a semicolon with no conjunction.
Example: She went to see the movie, and she liked it very much.
She went to see the movie; she liked it very much.
