Introduction Paragraph
Context: American Politics has allowed seemingly underhanded tactics that have given certain candidates an upper hand. Candidates may go as far as to redistrict boundaries and take money from large corporations in order to gain a position in the government, but in the end the people end up suffering. That begs the question, is our election system really that fair?
Thesis (Claim + Supports)
The election system in the United States is unfair due to processes such as Gerrymandering, Lobbying, and the electoral college.

Main Idea:
Gerrymandering is an unfair process as it allows parties to redistrict boundaries to gain an unfair advantage against their competitors and it silences the peoples voices.

According to americanprogress.org, “It is a political dirty trick—and an extremely harmful one—that turns democracy upside down, letting politicians choose their voters instead of voters choosing their politicians.” Redistricting has caused a decrease in children’s education. Politicians did this because they know they’ll get re-elected even if they don’t have the popular vote because of how they gerrymandered the districts. This all adds up since the legislature is filled with senators who gerrymander and don’t have the popular vote meaning that the decisions done by the legislative branch isn’t within the people’s best interest. Legislators used processes such as packing and cracking in order to gain the favor of the vote and get elected. Gerrymandering originated as an unfair practice that was signed by a senator named Elbridge Gerry to ensure that his party would win.

My evidence practically aligns with the main Idea I had for the paragraph. Gerrymandering does silence the voice of people by allowing politicians to choose their voters instead of vice versa. Even if politicians don’t get the popular vote if they gerrymander they will still end up in office which gives them a major unfair advantage against their competitors. Gerrymandering itself was created just to give an unfair advantage to your political party which is why it falls under an unfair process.

Corruption through politics doesn’t just end at gerrymandering.

The electoral college implementation in the U.S. political system brought along as much corruption as it gave the people little to no power to choose their rulers. That goes against the intent of the founding fathers who wanted the people to have the power.
