Write a literacy narrative that re-tells one important scene, incident, experience, or character
in your development as a reader, writer, or thinkerin other words, in your development as a student. To help
guide your writing, you might consider answering one of the following questions:
What is your earliest memory of writing?
Who was a significant person who helped shape or determine a turning point in your writing/reading?
When, where, how, and why did you learn to use language? Who or what helped you?
In what ways has your culture affected the way you read and write?
A well-rounded narrative will more than likely make some reference to what happened, who was involved,
when and where it happened, how it happened, and why it happened.
The Criteria: The literacy narrative is autobiographical, so you are not writing an essay in the traditional,
academic sense. You should tell a story that unfolds chronologically, rather than writing in the thesis-driven
format you may be familiar with in other writing situations.
Remember that an effective story always shows, rather than tells. Remember too that you are working to capture
a particular experience, interaction or moment; therefore, you CANNOT possibly account for ALL of your
experiences in education. Instead include brief illustrative narrative or anecdotes (Cooley 116).
Your narrative should include the following:
first-person narration (I)
appropriate verb tenses
a central point or focus and consistent point of view
chronological order and purposeful organization with appropriate transitions
plot and sensory details (smell, sight, taste, touch, sound)
Formatting Requirements:
1. 3 pages, typed and double-spaced
2. MLA format, including an original title.
