Section 1
1. What is Marxs notion of class consciousness and false consciousness and why are they connected?
2. What is the difference between mechanical and organic solidarity. Give me an example of both and say why they are an example.
3. What is rationality? Why is it an important concept for our world? (This is a question about Weber)
Section 2
Write a discussion on the below.
Its a very very dense chapter that has material with which you may or may not already be familiar.
With Marx or Weber–Durkheim too, but its a bit more elusive–what do you think is relevant to our world?
Please note: I am, not asking you to read the Communist Manifesto. I am not asking you about the USSR or China or Pete Seger and therefor I do not care one bit about “communism” or the political project of Marxism. This material is not really in your book. I do not want you to write about Marxist politics of the 20th or 21st century in any capacity what so ever. if you do so, i will see that you are not following directions and think that internet is a better source of information than your text book. It isn’t.
I understand if you look things up online. However the textbook is what is required and not MaxWeber.com.
Example of Discussion:
One very significant point made by Emile Durkheim that is relevant to our world would be the topic of solidarity. The two types of solidarity mentioned were mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity. I felt a connection with both terms because I feel like it relates very well with the world we live in. One term, mechanical solidarity has a great deal of unity in it, where society shares the same or similar routines, which is relevant to an extent to our world. Take an example, most students’ typical daily routines. It’s very normal or appears to be for everyone else for students to go to school or college every day and go to work afterwards and etc. It does not seem odd from one student to another perspective. Similarly to older people who are further in their careers. They may have the job of their dream and go to work every single day and share their free time with family and friends. That appears to be the norm for most people. However, organic solidarity also makes sense in this perspective as well. Organic solidarity is on a more specific end and quite different from one person to another. Both types of solidarity help society to survive. In a way our society functions with both components.
