Why I Chose This Trend Area: I chose the online learning/ technology trend area because I have something in common with it. I too am an online learner. I was interested in seeing how many others had that in common and the projection growth in regard to online learning.
How This Falls in Line with My Specialization: My specialization is Leadership of Educational Organizations. This falls right in line with my specialization because I may be part of an educational administration tasked with the responsibility of figuring out a strategy that best suits modern day and future enrollments.
Explain the purpose of an internal scan and how it is different from an external scan: Internal and external scans allow an institution to weave together data to create an effective strategy that contributes to the progress and effectiveness of an institution (Bryson, 2018). From what I have read in Strategic Planning for Public and Non-Profit Organizations, it appears to me that internal scanning involves data derived from within the institution such as current enrollment numbers and external scanning involves outside trends that may affect the institution such as data derived from similar type institutions (Bryson, 2018).
Amarillo College of Texas external scan concerning student enrollment and online courses:
For this external scan, I have chosen Amarillo College of Texas. Amarillo College did an external scan in regard to online learning and its impact on the educational institution. Amarillo college has determined through their external scan that online enrollments is expected to rise significantly, and that was back in 2008 (Distance Education Internal Scan and External Scan, 2009). Amarillo College determined that a 5th of all students enrolled in higher education were taking at least 1 online course (Distance Education Internal Scan and External Scan, 2009). From fall 2006 to fall 2007, online education grew 12.9% (Distance Education Internal Scan and External Scan, 2009). 2/3 of higher education institutions who offer at least an associate degree view online education as critical to long term growth and strategy (Distance Education Internal Scan and External Scan, 2009). There are 3 main reasons faculty believe that online learning is very important, and those 3 reasons are: flexible access for students, innovative way for reaching students, and it is the way of the future (Distance Education Internal Scan and External Scan, 2009). This is causing higher education institutions to increase their geographical reach (Distance Education Internal Scan and External Scan, 2009). All this data was collected through an external scan by the division of assessment and development at the Amarillo College of Texas.
