art 1: Write a paragraph (approx. 250 words) in which you discuss what you have learned about the situation of the university.
Consider answering any (or a combination) of the following questions:
What do you want to remember most as you enter university?
What’s the biggest difference between high school and university reading and writing that you’ve observed? What’s a similarity?
What surprised you about what you’ve learned?
Do you have a particular concern about attending university that you can share?
Part 2: Respond to this post: “This module introduced me to university as a research institution that creates and shares knowledge. I learned the large importance of scholarship in such a context – unlike I thought, not only professors engage in creative activity. Students also make contributions to their fields, in addition to learning. This is because the essence of university writing is working out complex ideas. This requires original and ambitious thinking, contrary to most school assignments in which students just explain concepts. In university, students take an approach without a pre-existing thesis. For this reason, assignments often do not have clear expectations; there is no particular answer. This freedom particularly surprised me. At the same time, I learned that academic work can not be so unique to the point it is ungrounded. This is why writing in academia can be compared to an “unending conversation” or a “puzzle”. It is essential that students take part in self-motivated intellectual work that builds up on already existing knowledge. What I want to remember most as I undertake university writing is to understand the context in which I am writing before I actually begin my work. This will allow me to be aware of what is already known in my field and thereby discover the implicit demands of what still needs to be explored. As a result, I will be able to make authentic contributions and introduce new points of reflection to the topics I choose to write about. A concern I have about attending university is the increase in workload, although I know I will eventually get used to it.”
As you respond, consider any (or a combination) of the following questions:
Which response do you relate to most?
Why did this responcixse seem thoughtful to you?
