You must carry on a debate with the assigned books, asking questions, thinking about the greater significance of the work (“so what?”) and its historical merits (“prove it”). In grading the papers, I will also be looking for clarity of expression and grammatical consistency.
As I said in class, your paper must address the following questions: What is the author’s main thesis? What types of evidence does he use? Does his evidence support his thesis? What is the significance of the argument? Is anything missing from the argument? And is there a bias in the argument such that you don’t really trust his interpretation?
