Thesis: The sample essay names 2-3 causes of social media addiction & 2-3 solutions that the student writer discusses in her essay.
PEA Paragraph Organization–Two Options:
Students have two options for how to organize their PEA body paragraphs in Essay #3:
Block–Using the block method means that your essay will present your 2-4 causes in the first half of your essay and the 2-4 solutions in the second half of your essay, so that the ’causes’ are the first block of PEA paragraphs and the ‘solutions’ are the second block of PEA paragraphs
Alternating–Using the alternating method means that your essay will (after the introduction), present the first cause in your thesis and then the first solution and then alternate again with cause then solution, cause then solution with PEA paragraphs alternating between causes and solutions throughout your essay
Concession-Refutation Paragraph–Your counter-argument paragraph can go wherever it fits best, most logically in the body of your essay; it just needs to be after the introduction and before the conclusion. If you have no more fitting/logical place for your counter-argument, the classical/traditional position for it is right before the conclusion
Recommended Essay #3 Organization:
A. Introduction–Create 3 parts to engage & orient the reader to your thesis
Hook the reader with an attention-getter, such as a relevant thought-provoking question, a meaningful quote, startling statistic, or a personal experience/brief story that relates to your opinion/thesis
Give background information that gives context and prepares the reader for the thesis. This could include explaining key concepts/definitions, providing relevant personal or historical information
State your thesis in 1-3 sentences at the end of the introduction as a promise to the reader about what the essay is about. A successful thesis includes your opinion, responds to the essay question, & reveals your essay organization plan & may list the ideas your essay discusses
B. Body ParagraphsWrite P.E.A. paragraphs in ‘block’ or ‘alternating’ format
P–Point –State 1-2 sentences at the start of each body paragraph that restates part of your thesis & gives the main idea of the paragraph
E–EvidenceOffer specific evidence (1-2 sandwiches) in each paragraph that backs up the point of each paragraph and relates to your thesis
A–Analysis and wrap-upAn analysis and wrap-up that explains how the E (evidence) supports the P (point)
Counter-ArgumentWrite at least one concession-refutation paragraph that follows the 4-part class model
C. Conclusion
Restates your thesis and key points of your body paragraphs (but not in the exact same words and style as you used in your thesis–specifically, don’t use a list style again in your conclusion). The conclusion also brings closure without adding new ideas not discussed in the body paragraphs
D. Other
Title–Include an engaging title that ties to your thesis
Works CitedInclude an Modern Language Association (MLA) formatted list of your sources–The WC does NOT count as one of the 5-6+ essay pages required; the Works Cited should contain 5-6+ sources
