Discuss the Civil Rights movement and the perceived affiliation with it by the Democratic Party, contribute to a shift in support from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party in the south? Do you believe that it is fair to say that that shift in support from the Democrats to the Republicans in the south was entirely about opposition to Civil Rights by southern whites or is there a logical case to be made that much of the Civil Rights movement eroded what was viewed as “traditional American values?” Do you think the election of Ronald Reagan as President in 1980 was more a result of a rising conservative tide in America or mainly because Reagan was seen as someone who would be tougher against the Soviet Union?
