As with any social and cultural disease, policies are developed to handle the effects and results. The purpose of this exercise is to explore just one disease and analyze the policies that have resulted from its emergence. You will be looking at the policies that have resulted from AIDS and specifically, you will be looking at the policies that deal with AIDS in elementary schools.
1. Go to Google.com, and search for AIDS in elementary schools. What types of materials do you find? Research reports? Policy statements? Personal essays? Find 3 sources that you can cite.
2. Use Google to go to PubMed (Links to an external site.), the National Library of Medicines database of scholarly articles. Then, search again for AIDS in elementary schools. How does the type of information you get from PubMed differ from the type of information you found using Google?
3. Go to PubMed again, but this time search for HIV in elementary schools rather than AIDS in elementary schools. How does this affect your results?
4. From a medical sociology perspective, write an essay on the topic, which includes an analysis and a conclusion of your findings and your position. Using APA, make sure that you cite all of the sources that you used to form your analysis. Pay attention to the grading rubric.
