Are there differences between the perception created by the title and the remainder of the article?

For this assignment you are to find (online) newspaper articles that deal with the various components of the criminal justice system and discuss the articles in relation to course materials.

You will need to find a minimum of 10 newspaper articles that deal with issues within the various parts of the criminal justice system (police, courts, or corrections). The articles should all cover different stories.

The main purpose of this assignment is to identify and discuss specific aspects of the course materials that are covered or demonstrated in news articles and how the newspapers cover issues discussed in this course. For example, you may choose an article on a story involving police that demonstrates one of the police roles. You would then talk about the specific police role from the course materials and discuss how it is demonstrated or portrayed in the article. In your discussion you must include enough description from the course materials so that it is clear to the reader how the article relates to course materials.

You should also include critical analysis in your discussion. For example, is the content of the article consistent with what was covered in the course materials? How might the article contribute to public opinion generally on the issue/topic? Are there differences between the perception created by the title and the remainder of the article? Are there any explanations offered in the articles for the issue under study?

Some specific things to remember/consider when working on your assignment:

For this assignment you should select newspaper articles (from local or national Canadian newspapers) that deal with aspects of the Canadian criminal justice system (the story being covered should be Canadian and deal with some aspect of the Canadian criminal justice system).
You should have a minimum of 10 articles.
The articles must be from Canadian newspapers (i.e. not cbc.ca, ctv.ca, etc.). Online versions of the newspaper stories for this assignment are fine, just be sure that they are newspapers.
You should find articles that cover a range of topics/issues in the criminal justice system.
You should choose articles that offer some detail/depth on the issue (i.e., not a one-paragraph story that just states that a particular crime was committed, or a person was charged, or appearing in court, etc.). There should be enough description in the article that you can adequately relate it to the course materials.
Your articles should be relatively current (i.e., from the last six months).
In your discussion of the articles, be specific on what aspect of the course material is being demonstrated. You do not need to use resources other than course materials but I will be looking for a demonstration of your understanding of the course materials and ability to synthesize ideas and information.
Include a copy of each of the articles right in your assignment (copy and paste). Please do not include photos from the articles or weblinks – just the article, the headline, and reference information should be included.
Your assignment should have an overall introduction and conclusion and a properly formatted reference list.
It should be clear where one article/discussion ends and the next starts.
Your assignment should be properly formatted which includes consistent font size (12 point) and style, and proper referencing. Your discussion should be double-spaced but you can single-space the articles.
