In this assignment, you will be finding a research paper on your own and performing a hypothesis test described in that paper, with the intention of reaching the same conclusion as the researchers.
First, find a research paper in the medical field where hypothesis testing is performed and the point estimate is either the mean or the proportion of the sample.
You may use, but are not limited to, the library’s ProQuest database (Links to an external site.) to search for an article.
Tips:
You will find that many papers perform several tests using several different variablesyou just need to comment on a single hypothesis test.
Published research does not always report the standard deviation of variables, so if you’re having trouble finding such an example, you might have better luck analyzing a proportion than a mean.
To find an article for this assignment, consider using search terms like p-value, clinical, confidence, etc.
If you look through an article and find it difficult to follow or lacking in detail, dont hesitate to discard it and look for a better one.
Steps
Once you have found a suitable article, complete the following in a Word document:
Cite the article using APA style.
In a Word document, write a few paragraphs about the article that include the following information:
What is the population under consideration? What is being tested?
What are the null and alternative hypotheses? Use mathematical notation (e.g. u=13.6, ) where appropriate.
Briefly discuss the methodology. How were members of the sample chosen? How was data obtained from the members of the sample?
What level of significance was used? What was the p-value for the sample data?
What was the researchers conclusion?
Use the statistical data stated in the paper to perform the hypothesis test yourself. Using the population and sample mean/proportion given in the paper, see if you can obtain the same p-value as the researchers using the online tools discussed in the lessons. Show your inputs. (You probably won’t find a paper that shows the raw data collected in the study, which is why you won’t be able to use XLMiner.)
Briefly discuss whether you think the researchers conclusion is accurate. Do the methods seem sound? Could some form of bias have been introduced?
