Write a Literature Review on any ONE of the topics covered in this course. (Topic chosen: Migration and the Making of New York).
Review of lecture for that week: You will be introduced to the history and key areas of interest with respect to the history of New New York as a global city that was in large part founded and sustained by migration. The city is important as it demonstrates how a place is altered over the course of two centuries of migration. The city became home to millions of people fleeing persecution and looking for more prosperous circumstances. This migrants were treated with fear and subjected to surveillance for the last two centuries with accusations that New York was not an “American city”. Whilst we remark upon the vibrant cultural innovations that occured in New York, we also see it as a city of repression where identities were curtailed as well as remade.
Your review should discuss four academic readings, which can be a mixture of books and journal articles or essays in edited volumes. You are free to engage with additional online resources, including blogs, videos, news articles, images etc. However, these will not count towards your minimum FOUR readings. There is no upper limit of the number of readings you can engage with. However, do prioritise selection and quality over quantity. (approx. 2000-2250 words).
Give your literature review a suitable title. You can use subtitles to help you organise your writing. You should avoid using direct quotes unless absolutely necessary and write in your own words. Any ideas or summaries of ideas presented in the texts, and any quotations you do choose to use must be properly referenced, including page numbers. You are free to use either in text referencing or Chicago or MLA style footnotes. You should not use end notes. You should include a bibliography, presented in the way that conforms to your referencing style.
