Can you recognize or make modern day parallels to the New England Puritans and their beliefs? Where might we encounter “fire and brimstone” rhetoric today? How do Puritan beliefs inform Franklins ethical values?
Part 2.
How would you describe the contrast we see between the literature of the age of “enlightenment,” with its rhetoric of natural individual rights, such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and slave narratives, that lack any of the above? What seem to be common themes in the two genres and how do they reflect on each other? Recommended texts: Franklin, Jefferson (Unit 4), Jacobs (Unit 11). Make sure you watch the lecture for a good overview of the material.
