Alpheus Thompson helped push California toward trade with China. Since those days trade with China has exploded and is now a very important part of California’s economy. China’s authoritarian government, its horrible treatment of the Uygher and Tibetan ethnic minority peoples, and the devastation of its environment all make this relationship extremely problematic and possibly immoral. California should lead the United States in moving away from trade with China and towards other countries in Asia that are more democratic and concerned about their people and their environment.
