Between 1834 and 1836, the Mexican government confiscated California mission properties and exiled the Franciscan friars who helped influence the colonization of California through the establishment of the missions. The missions weresecularized–broken up and their property sold or given away to private citizens. Secularization was supposed to return the land to the Indians. However, some native groups have brought the Spanish to court and charged them with ruining their culture. They claim that that the Spanish have systematically destroyed the indigenous culture.
Were the Spanish Missions riddled with corruption and therefore degraded the native population? Was that the primary reason the native culture was destroyed?
You are a new lawyer and have been asked by your superior to either play the role of the defense attorney or the prosecuting attorney and argue whether or not this charge is true.
To make your case, use material from Pacific Eldorado Chapter 2 and at least two outside resources to write an essay arguing for or against the assertion that the Spanish Missions corrupted and degraded the native population and was a primary reason the native culture was destroyed.
