Review of existing literature. Summarize what is currently known and, if possible, critique methods used to collect data.

Research Presentation

Students will select a topic related to substance abuse or process/behavioral addictions and
develop a presentation (Power Point only) on this topic. Read the rubric (attached below)
The presentation must be 15-20 slides long (This does not include references: I will allow more
if needed) and be supported by at least 10 refereed journal articles, 2 of which must be written
within the past 2 years. Do not include videos or voice overs.
Ensure a reference list is included in the presentation. Do not simply copy and paste information from sources. Research and paraphrase your findings in your own
words. Presentations with Turnitin scores above 35% will be reviewed and/or referred as
appropriate to inquire further into elevated scores and/or plagiarism. In case of elevated scores or
evidence of plagiarism, points will be deducted for APA style up to 25 points and including a
zero grade for the assignment.
Information on harmful compulsive behaviors and treatment is, unfortunately, too vast to cover
completely in a semester. The purpose of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to
independently explore in depth a topic that is of interest to you.
The presentation should not reflect personal opinions on a particular topic but should be
empirically grounded (in a summary in your own words of what others in the field have found).
If you would like to use your opinion, please use I phrases and only in gaps in the knowledge
base or implications for clinical practice section.
Use quotes to a minimum. Points will be deducted for excessive use of quotes. There should
be no more than 2 direct quotes in this presentation. Instead of quotes, paraphrase your
understanding of content to support your ability to engage critical thinking and analysis of
content.
Organization:
The presentation should be sub-divided into the following headings.
Review of existing literature. Summarize what is currently known and, if possible, critique
methods used to collect data. Include in your lit review why it is an important issue today and
generally what is known in the literature (suggested limit: 6-8 slides)
Gaps in the Knowledge Base. Identify issues that we do not yet understand related to your
topic and future research needs (suggested limit: 3-4 slides)
Implications for Clinical Practice. Based on the research literature, identify the treatment and
intervention options that practitioners, agencies, and communities should consider and
implement (suggested limit: 6-8 slides).

Adults may seek treatment sooner because of so much to lose. 5
