Paper Assignment:
Write a scholarly paper on a topic/issue related to women of color of your choice that is 5-6
pages in length, excluding figures, tables, and bibliography. Papers should reflect primary and/or
secondary research and must present a thesis, road map, analyze evidence that supports the
thesis, and end with a conclusion that considers the significance and implications of the paper.
Papers must cite at least 6 sources and 4 of them should be scholarly and/or policy sources.
Papers must be typed using 12 pt font, free of grammatical and spelling errors, and formatted
with 1 side margins and 1 margins on top and bottom. Use either parenthetical citation for in-
text citations or footnotes.
The paper can take one of two forms:
1) Argumentative Paper: The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the
student to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a
position on the topic concisely. Argumentative essay assignments generally call for
extensive research of literature or previously published material. Argumentative
assignments may also require empirical research where the student collects data through
interviews, surveys, observations, or experiments. Detailed research allows the student to
learn about the topic and to understand different points of view regarding the topic so that
she/he may choose a position and support it with the evidence collected during research.
Regardless of the amount or type of research involved, argumentative essays must
establish a clear thesis and follow sound reasoning
