The assignment of this essay is to craft a utopia of your own devising. You have total freedom in designing the no-place of your utopia and adopting a writing style through which you describe that no-place; however, your essay must include at least three of the formal elements common to the literary utopias that we have been studying in class. In assessing your utopia, we will consider the ways in which it fits the broader literary tradition we have studied during the semester. It might do so by evoking common themes of previous utopias (i.e., the confrontation between so-called civilization and savagery or the relationship between humans and technology) or by drawing on the traditional forms of utopian fiction (i.e., the travelers tale or the philosophical dialogue), just to name a few possibilities.
Given the length of the assignment, it may be that what you submit will be imagined as an excerpt from a larger utopia. If this is the case, feel free to describe the larger work from which this section is excerpted. Alternately, you may conceive of your utopia as a very brief text, along the lines of Montaignes Of Cannibals or Dicks Minority Report.
Dont forget to give your utopia a title!
