Research and record several of the respected energy calculation equations (either list them by name or type the number equation)

Discussion Overview

The field of Nutrition has made incredible advances in the last century; however, one must consider the pioneers of the field and give credit where it is due. In this respect, the scientists, Harris & Benedict earned a spot in the proverbial Nutrition Hall of Fame for studying energy requirements of healthy humans. In 1919, they published the male and female versions of their equation that was based on thousands of hours of research. Now, around 100 years later, we still use it to estimate patient calorie needs! There are many accepted versions of critical care or hospitalized patient calorie equations, it is important to first understand the situation in which a hospitalized patient may be in from a metabolic standpoint. Once that is considered, then the appropriate equation can be chosen along with the stress or activity multiplier (if applicable). This is how nutrition professionals obtain more accurate hospitalized patient energy estimations.

In preparation for the assignment, address the below questions and topics:

Research and record several of the respected energy calculation equations (either list them by name or type the number equation)

Using your own words, what is basal metabolic rate (BMR) a measure of?

Then, research how external variables influence ones metabolic rate

Do the external variables influence metabolism by increasing or decreasing the total metabolic rate?

Why do you think this happens (from an energy standpoint)?
