Upon watching the Oscar Awards, which aired on multiple television networks toward the beginning of the year, I learned two things. One should never leave the room during the last 30 minutes of the show and the academy is not as accommodating as it should be. For example, during the awards show, there were quite a few recipients and audience members that displayed access and functional needs. Yet, the academy did not appear to accommodate each of these individuals needs. The individuals themselves did. According to ABC News (2022), Troy Kotsur became the second deaf actor to win an Academy Award. Upon giving his speech, we can hear the interpreter that he brought with him in the background interpreting what he was saying in sign language (TNT, 2022). An interpreter was only used when the crew of the film Coda received an award. As a result, this has been heavily criticized by the American Sign Language Community.
Question
With the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences being such an expansive organization, how is it that the attendees access and functional needs are presumably overlooked? If you were the leader of the Academy, how could you change the organizations culture and diminish any resistance to change to produce positive organizational socialization and public image (Griffin, Phillips, and Gully, 2020, p. 509)?
