Introduction
In December 1865, the 13th Amendment was drafted to bring an end to slavery However, the events that had occurred after that amendment indicated to a large extent that a new form of slavery was about to unfold. Events such as black codes, Jim Crow Laws, and Vagrancy Laws in particular juxtaposed African American incarceration in an astounding way. Why is there such a high rate of black incarceration? Is socioeconomic status a factor in black incarceration? This essay examines how post slavery has brought on a new form of ethnic injustice by way of African American incarceration.
