Today week we spend sometime in class discussing the origins of discriminatory ideologies. Next week I will give you a brief introduction about how Europeans (mainly Dutch) find their way to South Africa in 1600s. To contextualize and prepare for our short lecture on Dutch please read from your book: Iris Berger, South Africa in World History(Oxford University Press, 2009), page 2, authors Preface and chapter 2.
As you read these chapters, pay attention and take some notes/summary, from chapter 2: i) How the lives of Black South Africans/natives change due to their interaction with the first white European (Dutch) in South Africa); ii) How the natives respond to these changes (for example, discuss collaboration & conflict between natives and Dutch)? iii) Make sure to study maps, there is lot of information that can be obtained from those maps (incorporate information from these maps in your summary). Upload your summary on Canvas and Assignment. Remember these reflections are part of your participation grade. As long as you do your readings, summaries should be easy and they are open-ended responses, you can never be wrong.
