Students will be required to submit a ten (10) page research paper focused on an area of Violence that interests them the most. Topics must be drawn from the assigned course text and must be pre-approved by the course instructor. Students are free to email potential paper topics to the instructor for pre-approval. Students should utilize the below general framework as a guide/structure for the paper (see Riedel, pp. 16-17 for details on the framework: Trends/Patterns, Causes, Interventions):
*Introduction: Description of the problem/violent crime situation and note what is your argument that you will support in this paper (using the below format)
*Patterns/Trends: consider the history of the problem, how common is this crime (UCR data)? identify patterns with this particular crime who are the offenders and victims, where does it occur? etc.
*Examples: Provide example cases and your thoughtful assessment/opinion on the impact this problem has on society
*Causes/Explanations: Explain the likely cause or causes behind this violent crime(s)?
*Interventions: What is a potential intervention plan and why do you believe it will be successful? (consider describing existing intervention approaches and what has worked or not)
The paper assignment should be in APA 7th edition format, 12 point font, double-spaced, and should be no less than 10 pages of written work (not counting cover page and reference page), and must include at least 5 separate sources. Sources must be drawn from scholarly articles published within the last 10 years.
