Public Relations is practiced in every industry in the private sector, government and non-profits. In each industry and sector, it is practiced differently given the needs of the particular organization and its publics. For this assignment, you will choose an industry you would like to explore. You will research how public relations is practiced in the industry you choose. You will write a paper based on your research and present your findings to the class. The specific requirements for this assignment are below:

1) Select an industry you may want to consider as a career in the future. Get your industry approved by your professor. You need to submit a topic for approval by April 14 via Moodle.

2) Research your industry and public relations within that industry. You can find information through the librarys online databases on the field and the practice of PR in the field youve selected. Please avoid personal interviews as a source of information. Base your work on your readings and library research. YOU MUST TYPE, DOUBLE SPACE, PROOFREAD AND PROPERLY CITE YOUR SOURCES in APA. LENGTH IS 5-8 PAGES, NOT INCLUDING THE WORKS CITED.

3) Write your paper based on your findings. You must include the following:

a) A description of the industry youve selected (government/corporate/non-profit/agency) how many people are employed in PR positions in that industry and whether the PR field is growing,

b) A SPECIFIC explanation of what a public relations professional with the job title you selected would do on a daily basis,

c) A description of where theyll likely work (urban/rural, west coast/Midwest, office/remotely, etc.)

d) An outline of what theyll likely make in salary,

e) An explanation of what specific training/education they are required to have,

f) 8 examples of actual public relations tactics in your chosen industry. Please number these in your formatting and provide a citation for each.

For example, news releases, social media, newsletters, videos, websites, interviews arranged by PR people, etc. You may NOT duplicate companies or examples. For example, you may only have ONE Facebook post, and you can only use a company once in your examples. The point of this exercise is to get you to look at companies/organizations in this industry and get a wide view of the types of different public relations activities in which they engage. In your report, each example must include a written description of who you think the specific target audience is and how this example works to influence that audience. Remember that you are dealing with public relations material in this paper, not marketing (i.e. advertising). Product advertising, social media ads and any other promotions where money has changed hands are not acceptable examples of PR work. Also, news stories written about an company with no obvious participation of the company and its PR staff should be avoided. Public relations work is geared toward opinion formation and relationship development.

g) In-text APA citations must be used within your paper and for each work product example. All sources must be listed in a properly formatted reference age at the end. A minimum of 4 reference citations plus the 8 work product example citations are required for a minimum total of 12 references.
