Now its time to put together a lot of the things weve learned this semester by reexamining The Return of Martin Guerre. Last time, I asked you to consider a question about women and the Renaissance. This time I want to know about the dispersal of the Renaissance, about how it moves through Europe, and what are the signs that it has arrived. So, the prompt for the final paper is:
Has the Renaissance arrived in Artigat by the time of the Martin Guerre trial?
Instead of answering this question yes or no, I want you to give me two concrete examples from The Return of Martin Guerre that support the idea that it has arrived, and two concrete examples that support the idea that it hasnt arrived. Be sure to explain why youve picked the evidence youve picked.
When were talking about Florence in the 15th century, its easy to see the evidence of the Renaissance. Its everywhere, from the school children to the art. When were talking about rural France in the mid-16th century, it might be harder to spot, but if you look, its there. Of course, Artigat is a also a very traditional place, right? Things are still being done in the old ways. What part of the Renaissance is there, and what isnt there?
Clarification: When I say “Artigat” what I really mean the whole Martin Guerre event, including the things that happen in Toulouse, since these affect what happens in Artigat.
