Compare and contrast the ways in which Rina Benmayor defines cultural citizenship in her article, Narrating Cultural Citizenship: Oral Histories of First Generation College Students of Mexican Origin and how Adam MeKeown defines citizenship in, Ritualization and Regulation: The Enforcement of Chinese Exclusion in the United States and China. How do these two understandings of citizenship differ and/or how are they similar? How do they utilize gender, race, property, labor, class, etc. to construct their understandings of citizenship?
Your essay must have a thesis statement and you will be making an argument to defend your thesis. Include 2-3 examples EACH from the Benmayor and McKeown articles to support your argument and use keywords discussed in class to do so. Ie: race, gender, property, labor, class, etc. Do NOT utilize any outside sources. Papers must be between 750 – 1,000 words using Times New Roman, 12 pt, double-spaced formatting. Include a Bibliography page using MLA format.
