In a polished, 3-5 page MLA formatted essay and accompanying presentation (see the Final Presentation assignment), analyze one poet as an exemplar of their poetic movement through research and analysis. This essay can combine biography, history, and literary analysis as support as needed, but must establish the hallmarks of the movement and analysis of at least two poems (or one longer epic poem such as Absalom and Achitophel) that support the chosen poets classification in that school or movement. You may choose from the following poets:
Cavalier Poets (Utilize Ben Johnson and Horace in addition to secondary sources for establishing the hallmarks of this movement)
Robert Herrick
Richard Lovelace
Thomas Carew
Metaphysical Poets (Dr. Samuel Johnsons Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets can be used here as a secondary source)
John Donne
George Herbert
Andrew Marvell
Restoration Poets (Dr. Samuel Johnsons Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets can be used here as a secondary source)
John Milton
Amelia (sometimes Emily) Lanyer
John Dryden
Katherine Philips
The essay should focus on the primary poet and avoid addressing contemporary comparisons, using first and second person, and addressing a wide variety of possible arguments. Any history or biography should be used to support the poets connection to the movement or period. Large sections of summary should not be used. This essay must use at least two scholarly secondary journal articles or books (library database or books by scholars sources only – no reference works will count towards this requirement) in addition to the primary sources (poems). These secondary works can be full book biographies of your author (not web pages or articles), books about the historical context that the author was writing in, or journal articles focusing on an analysis specific to your work or other works by the author. Poems by other authors for comparison can be used but do not count towards the required sources. You may only use two block quotes (a quote longer than four lines), and the block quote may not be longer than 8 lines. Encyclopedia, dictionary, and general reference works will not be counted towards this total (but you can use them if needed). All quotes, paraphrases, and summaries must be correctly attributed. You must also include a MLA style works cited page (this does not contribute to the total page length).
