In Blog 2, youll write me a letter (I go by Dr. Boutwell or Professor Boutwell) about your reflections and analysis of Section 2. In your letter, include the following (including the headers in bold):
Definitions (1 point): Define our three concepts (intersectionality, levels of oppression, and white supremacy) in your own words and as they relate to specifically to this course. Be sure to provide a definition of each of the types of racism (internalized, interpersonal, systemic).
Intersectionality (2 points): Discuss what stood out to you the most in the videos about intersectionality. Be sure to discuss Kimberl Crenshaw and the two other people you learned from by name. How do their words and stories impact your understanding of intersectionality? Why does this concept matter so much?
Levels of Racism (2 points): How can understanding the three levels of racism (internalized, interpersonal, systemic) deepen/shift our understanding of racism? Discuss the three levels, with a focus on internalized and systemic racism. Do not in anyway blame people for their internalized oppression. Again, the internalized oppression seen in the videos is a result of systemic racism, not low self-esteem or bad parenting. Identify and number three concrete examples of systemic oppression and name the source of the information through two quotes (one per TedTalk videoone on internalized racism, one on systemic racism) and two hyperlinks. Be sure to draw from multiple sources in your answer. (See Hyperlinks under Course Info for the required format for hyperlinks).
White Supremacy (2 points): There is a prevailing definition of white supremacy linked solely to violent hate groups. There is a more comprehensive definition in our material for this week. What is your understanding of white supremacy as defined by our assigned material? Why does this definition matter? What does it mean to position white supremacy as a white problem? What is your response to this framing?
Black Liberation (2 points): What is your definition of Black Liberation? In a section that primarily deals with various dimensions of oppression, why do we include this concept now? How does it relate to our both-and framework in this course? Who is one contemporary person that you admire who is part of the Black Liberation movement? (If you need some ideas, feel free to check out Module 13 or the Instagram account list at the bottom of Section 2).
Reflections (1 point): What was your experience completing the assigned materials this week? Why are these concepts so important for this course? How does it change the conversation when we focus less on interpersonal racism (what happens between two people) and focus more on white supremacy and racism as a systemic oppression? What do you want to take from this section to apply to the rest of our time together?
