After viewing Cave of Forgotten Dreams, please respond on the discussion board here. You should respond to at least one of these questions in a full way (there’s a rubric in this assignment so you can see what I’m after), and then provide a thoughtful response to at least one other student as well. By “thoughtful response,” we’re looking for things more than “I agree” or “I like your point” or “I disagree.” Really get into a discussion and see where it takes you. Make sure that EACH question gets answered as a class.
Here are the questions:
1) The filmmakers and those scientists that appear in the film express appreciation for the cave paintings using both formalism and contextualism. Think about a couple of examples of each and see if you can identify what is being said — what the “lingo” is — for each kind of criticism.
2) What does the film have to say about human expression, human imagination, and dreaming?
3) What most affected you about the film?
4) The film is, in many ways, a work of art about works of art. The filmmakers often use handheld lights, their own shadows, their own faces and bodies staring into the camera, silence, and string music in the background. Think about some moments in the film that you found particularly artful and be prepared to talk/discuss/write about them.
5) How might we better understand about how humans express themselves after we have seen the film?
6) The film explores the relationship between humans and the natural world in a number of ways: juxtaposing modern humans against the beautiful formations in the cave, juxtaposing human sounds (like string instruments and pianos) against natural sounds, and so on. What’s this about?
7) What’s the deal with the epilogue about the crocodilecixs? What does it mean?
