For this Directed Writing, see the articles posted about several of the Hitchcock or other directors films and write a critique of the authors analysis. For example, if you read The Hollywood Reporter article called North by Northwest, which was the original review of the movie when it was released, argue whether or not the authors critique is still valuable today. Do you agree with his assessment? What has changed in the intervening years that may make his review obsolete? Or is it still relevant today? Conversely, if you decide to write about Rear Window, you may choose from the reviews listed here as well to answer the same questions. Note that one of the reviews of Rear Window is written by an Irish native, and spellings and use of mechanics (i.e. italics, etc.) is different from ours. If you are to use that review, abide by the spellings and punctuation in that article.
In this Directed Writing, you MUST INCLUDE at least TWO direct quotes from the article itself. You do not have to agree with those quotes, but you need to seamlessly include quotations from the original source as a means of showing you can read and evaluate outside sources and use them in context. The articles you may use are attached here. There are also instructions for seamlessly introducing quotations attached here. Please read those before writing your essay.
Be careful not to resort to mere plot summary, however: summary begets more summary, and your task is not to summarize what happens in the film; your task is to interpret, explain, illuminate what is done or said by characters or narrator or drawn to our attention by the camera. Your discussion should be typed in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced between one-inch margins, and two full pages in length. You do need to include a header and title according to MLA Documentation Guidelines. (See the MLA Documentation Guidelines document under the Syllabus and Course Calendar Tab.)
