Gender in American Literature

GENDER: Compare and contrast the representation of gender oppositions in four or five works from the list below (readings in the uploaded attachment). Conventionally, the distinction between “man” and “woman” calls up distinctions between public and private, life outside the home vs. life in the home, active vs.passive, political vs. personal, rational vs. emotional, and so on. Do some of the readings support and reassert these conventional oppositions? Do other works call such traditional gendered oppositions into question? (Alternatively, you might also want to define a a different set of
gender oppositions that you see as central to the vision in certain works we read.)
