Construct a good philosophical essay/paper that fully discusses each of the numbered items below. You may not use any outside resources for this paper (i.e. no internet research or searches). The course site, Shaws book and the Supplemental Resources folder for each LU provide sufficient information for completing this assignment.
Any student who violates the no outside research instruction will receive a failing grade for the assignment.
The instructions for this CSP are as follows:
1. Choose one Case from any provided in Shaws book, Chapters 4-5. (Cases are found at the end of every chapter in Shaws book. Make sure the case you choose has a clear moral issue that you can identify and explain.)
2. Discuss the following moral theories as applied to the case you select:
Rawls theory of justice
Nozicks theory of justice
(NOTE: When you choose your case study, you should choose one where the two theories used come up with different enough analyses that you have something to argue about – if they both agree the action is equally wrong, that doesn’t give you anything to argue about.)
3. Write your CSP. The following is a (highly) suggested structure for your paper:
Introduction: The paper must have a very brief, clear introductory paragraph which explicitly identifies the case to be examined, the theories to be used, and definitely says which theory the paper will side with. (5 points)
Case Description: The paper must provide a concise and accurate description of the case, with a cited quote from the Shaw text. Be sure to identify the moral/ethical issue(s) at the core of the selected case. (5 points)
Theory Descriptions: The paper must provide a concise and accurate descriptions of the theories selected, with a cited quote from the Shaw text to support the description of each theory.
(10 points each, 20 total)
Theory Analyses: The paper must make fair and accurate analyses of how each moral theory would resolve the cases core moral/ethical issue(s). (10 points each, 20 total)
Argument: The paper must make a clear and definitive argument for one set of analyses (i.e. moral theory) over the other, free as possible of logical fallacies and other irrelevant biases. Keep this question in mind as you write this section: Which moral theory best resolves the moral/ethical issue(s) in the case? (20 points)
Style: The paper is written in a style appropriate for a humanities college class, which includes proper use of grammar, spelling, word choice, paragraph structure, etc. All quotes are properly cited. [When citing from Shaws book, you may simply indicate the page number within parentheses in the text of your paper. E.g. Shaw says, .. (45)]. (5 points)
