This course has focused in depth on five theorists of myth (Eliade, Freud, Jung, Campbell, and Frye). In
the process, certain major theoretical questions have recurred in class discussion, giving us insight into the
major issues in the study of myth and its symbolism. These would include such issues as the origin of myth;
its relation to the individual, culture and other disciplines; how it generates symbolic meaning, and in what
forms (i.e. what is the archetype? Where does it come from? How does it work?); and how do we go about
interpreting myth or live in relation to it. FOR YOUR TERM PAPER, choose two major theorists of myth, and
compare their theories of myth!!!!!! How do their theories of myth influence, resemble, and/or differ from one
another with regard to the conclusions or hypotheses they offer on these issues? What are their strengths and
weakness? Which is more tenable or useful for the student or scholar of the humanities?
