final paper should be 6 pages and will involve reflecting on an ethical topic or question of your choice. The paper will involve an analytic component and an applied component.
The analytic component is where you explain what the topic or question is, why you chose it, and what the ethical issues related to the topic/question are. This must be an evaluation, and not merely a summary, of the material on which you write. In other words, you must take a position on the ethical topic/question you choose, and then use reasoning and evidence to back up your position.
For example, if you decided to write about capital punishment, you would want to make the claim that capital punishment is right (or wrong), and then show, using specific and well-developed arguments, why it is right (or wrong), in dialogue with the ideas that we have discussed in class.
The applied component means that you then develop some kind of practical application for your position. How can you take the ideas that you have and put them into practice? This may involve developing a suggestion for some kind of social program, or public discussion of the topic, or personal action that you are planning to take. The goal is for you to turn your ideas and thoughts into actions.
The applied component should be something realisticsomething that you can actually do. The ultimate goal is to find a way to live out your ethics after this course is over.
Papers should be double-spaced, with twelve-point type, in Times New Roman or a similar font. Margins should be no more than 1.5 inches. Please include page numbers at the bottom of every page, and dont forget to include your name at the top of the first page!
